TL;DR

The spoiler preventer: A browser extension that actively blocks out spoilers to your favorite television series or movies. Inspired by the new Mercedes-Benz Collision Prevention Assist feature, I created a browser extension that prevents accidental collisions to spoilers.

The idea

The idea came about during one of our creative jamming sessions. We were brainstorming ideas for a new Mercedes-Benz campaign, and we came up with the idea of creating a browser extension that would prevent accidental collisions to spoilers. We thought it would be a fun way to promote the new Mercedes-Benz Collision Prevention Assist feature.

The Collision Prevention Assist feature uses a series of audible and visual warnings as well as an assistive brake system to prevent accidents. To promote this key selling safety feature, we wanted to find a way to prevent accidents from happening online too. More specifically, accidental spoilers.

Introducing Spoiler Preventer, a browser extension that actively blocks out potential spoilers to your favorite television series or movie. Simply choose the movie or series, and you will never encounter another spoiler accidentally again.

Execution

I quickly got to work on developing the browser extension. I used JavaScript to develop the extension, and I used the Chrome API to integrate the extension with the browser.

The extension reads through all the text, alternative text & metadata on the page and replaces any potential spoilers with a custom image. I also used the Chrome Storage API to store the user's preferences.

Stranger Things was the most popular show at the time, so I decided to use that as the default show for the extension. But users could easily change the show to any other show or movie they wanted.

This was such a fun & exciting project to work on, and I'm proud of the final product. The client was thrilled with the results, and the campaign was a huge success. The campaign was featured in multiple news outlets.
